Chinese Level 1:
Adult Group Class

Program Overview

Are you an adult interested to learn the most widely spoken language in the world? Whether you're aiming for a job promotion, seeking opportunities with Chinese companies, planning a trip to China, or simply wanting to connect with relatives, learning Mandarin Chinese is an incredibly worthwhile pursuit. At Jade Chinese School, our mission is to make your journey as effortless as possible. And for this to happen, you need to have a rock solid foundation, which is exactly what we designed this course to be. Our Chinese Level 1 course covers the Chinese phonetic system (PINYIN), character structures, basic grammar structures, and simple conversations. By the end of the program, you will be able to befriend native Chinese speakers, feel confident navigating China, and feel comfortable describing yourself, your family, your interests, your surroundings, and more!

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, every student will be able to:

  1. Type at least 220 Chinese characters

  2. Write at least 100 Chinese characters

  3. Speak over 220 words common words and questions for everyday use

  4. Hold simple daily conversations with native Chinese people

  5. Pass HSK level one test

Prerequisites

This program assumes a baseline understanding of the Chinese phonetic system. If you are a complete beginner, please refer to our basic fundamentals course, "Become a Genius in Chinese - 12 Hours in 1 Month." After completing that program, you will be ready to jump head first into this one!

Class Structure

We keep our class structure consistent so you always know what to expect. First, we review content from the previous lesson to reactivate the memory. Then, we go over the assigned homework, answering any questions and providing feedback. Next, we learn new content, which is mostly composed of student speaking. Finally, we take time to discuss the upcoming homework assignment.

Class Schedule

Our classes start from the second week of the month and last until the first week of the subsequent month. We offer morning, evening, and weekend sessions.

Class A: Mondays & Thursdays from 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm

Class B: Tuesdays & Fridays from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm

Class C: Wednesdays from 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm & Saturdays from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm

Additionally, we teach students in the form of two 1.5 hour lessons each week. For most students, we have found this to be the optimal arrangement. This class length allows us to cover two sections worth of material per lesson, with ample time for practicing, homework review, and questions. Additionally, we have found that meeting two times a week ensures steady student progress, as learned content stays fresh in the mind. With that said, we are willing to adapt to our students’ schedules if an alternative meeting schedule is desired.

Meeting Location

We want learning Chinese to be as accessible as possible, so we are very flexible with where we meet students. Online, we hold our classes on Zoom. In-person, we hold classes in Torrance and Palos Verdes. The specific location depends on the locations of the students who join.

Bonuses

While we allocate a lot of time to practice speaking during our lessons, we think it is important for students to have free conversations among each other in a more relaxed setting, simulating what life in China is like. That is why, as part of the HSK Level 1 Package, we give each student four free credits to our group speaking workshops. At these workshops, we focus on a specific theme (e.g. travel, business, cafe, etc.) and provide a space for students to speak casually with one another in the presence of a teacher, who gently corrects mistakes and offers speaking tips.

Additionally, we give students free credits to one video analysis group workshop, which practices listening comprehension and speaking, and one calligraphy workshop, which gives students a chance to engage in Chinese traditions using a hands-on approach.

School Methodology

As a school, we have a number of systems in place in order to ensure the highest quality instruction possible. First, the lesson materials created by our teachers are always validated by the school before instruction takes place. Second, we take special care to match each student with the teacher that is best fit for them, based on the student’s skill level and language goals. Third, we offer speaking workshops in addition to regularly scheduled classes which allow students to practice with each other in a more relaxed environment.
